At True Grit Retrievers, we specialize in Golden Retrievers from proven working lines. All our dogs are part of our family and bred with competitive and/or working homes in mind. We compete in hunt tests and obedience trials with all our dogs. When not working, our dogs are well-mannered house dogs.
Our goal with each litter is to produce healthy, mentally sound, good-looking puppies that are all business while working, but who can relax in front of the fireplace. Before becoming part of our breeding program, our adult Golden Retrievers are at least 4 years old, have OFA (Good or better) hip and elbow clearances, as well as eye (CERF and Optigen prcd-PRA) clearances and heart (OFA)clearances, and must show a stable temperament as well as superior talent in the hunting field/obedience ring.
If you are looking for a first-class working dog that you and your family will enjoy living with, please give us a call or email us. We are always delighted to talk dogs! We give preference to working/companion homes, where your dog will be part of the family.
We do not sell puppies to professional field trainers or to brood bitch homes.
I've never known a time I was not living with, loving, training and competing with a dog. I compete regularly in AKC obedience trials and both AKC as well as UKC hunt tests. I am a member in good standing of Louisiana Capital City Obedience Club, National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, Feliciana Retriever Club, Amite River Hunting Retriever club, Pontchartrain Hunting Retriever Club, and The Golden Retriever Club of America. I participate in continued education with Kevin Cheff, Pat Burns, Pat Nolan, and Connie Cleveland Nolan. My active breeder mentors are Kelly Kouwalki of HighRoller Golden Retrievers and Kathy Luke of Breu Bayou Golden Retrievers. It is my heart's desire to help you achieve results that mold your True Grit Golden Retriever puppy into your forever-dream-dog-come-true.
True Grit Pup's 3rd day begins with Early Neurological Stimulation. My goal is to produce the absolute best possible. ENS is correlated with improved cardiovascular performance (heart rate); stronger heart beats; stronger adrenal glands; more tolerance to stress; and greater resistance to disease.
True Grit Pup's 3rd day begins with Early Scent Introduction. According to research by Dr. Gayle Watkins, ESI is correlated with improved scenting abilities at an earlier age in adult dogs. I have noted the same in True Grit puppies and made it a permanent part of our puppy curriculum.
Puppies instinctively will not soil their next. True Grit Golden Retrievers uses this absolute fact to begin potty training at about 14 days old. Puppies are able to climb out of the nest to relieve themselves in a potty box. Gradually over the next 5 weeks puppies are given increasing amounts of space; however, they continue to use their potty box. The switch from potty box to grass is a breeze for new families.
At True Grit I carefully designed a curriculum to guide our litter's daily adventure, which challenges each pup's passion, courage, and determination. The goal at True Grit Golden Retrievers is to build the pup's desire to work for and please his human from the beginning. I also keep a careful log of each pup's response to their adventure, which creates a living and unique puppy story.
True Grit Puppies are given a Puppy Aptitude Test at 7 weeks to help determine temparament. The results of this test, the ongoing puppy log, and the family puppy agreement questionair determine which puppy would fit best with your home.
